Plainwell Flowers is encouraging everyone to get into the true spirit of Sweetest Day this year by participating in their 2nd annual Kindness Campaign Sweetest Day event on October 20th. Now through October 19th, Plainwell Flowers will be taking orders for $1 single-stem carnations that will be gifted to those living in Plainwell area nursing homes this Sweetest Day. Anyone in the community can help make a difference this year by gifting $1 or more to this month’s campaign. Plainwell Flowers will be kicking off the kindness by prepping 50 carnations to send. Community members and local businesses are encouraged to call, visit Plainwell Flowers’ website (PlainwellFlowers.com), or stop at their downtown Plainwell location at 113 S Main Street to be a part of the fun. Sweetest Day is a Midwest-born holiday. Originating in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, philanthropist and candy company employee Herbert Birch Kingston wanted to bring happiness to orphans and shut-ins. With help from family and friends, he distributed candy and small gifts to the underprivileged. Word of his efforts soon spread and actresses Ann Pennington and Theda Bara pitched in sending over 10,000 boxes of candy to hospitals and to young newspaper boys for their service to the public. Sweetest Day is primarily celebrated in the Great Lakes region, but has spread from coast to coast. Over the years the holiday has evolved into a way to express romantic love and appreciation for friends. Help Plainwell Flowers bring back the true spirit of the holiday this year and send a sweet surprise to someone locally.
