WMUK had no vacant permanent full-time positions during the period of this report, and no vacancies were filled. Therefore, there is no recruitment information to provide concerning applicants or referral sources.
No outside organizations requested WMUK to provide notification of job vacancies.
WMUK’s EEO outreach activities during the period covered by this report include:
- News internships designed to teach young people skills as radio reporters and producers. Internships cover a period of 14 weeks. During that period each intern spends 10-15 hours per week at the station, receiving training, preparing newscasts, and producing features. 10 interns participated in the program during the year and all produced pieces that were broadcast on air.
- Consultation, administrative assistance to and program evaluation for WKDS-FM, a high school student-operated stations licensed to the Kalamazoo Public Schools and managed by the area’s Education For Employment program. WMUK also participates in job shadow opportunities offered by WKDS, allowing students to have firsthand one-on-one experience with working radio professionals.
- On-site tours and in-class presentations about career skills, audio production, station management and developments in electronic media. These services have been provided to communications and journalism students at Western Michigan University as well as young children (scout troops) during the past year.
- Award of an annual $1000 radio scholarship for students at Western Michigan University’s Communications Department. The scholarships are awarded to qualifying students with a strong interest in audio production and community service. This year the scholarship was shared by two students: Emily Beard and Drew Kiewiet.
- Participation in a career fair at the new Clifford Media Center at Western Michigan University, under the auspices of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. WMUK’s station manager, program director, news director, and arts producer met with students and young professionals to provide information and career advice.
Western Michigan University, WMUK’s licensee, maintains a vigorous Equal Employment Opportunity program in compliance with state and federal law. The program is administered by David Glenn, Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity (269) 387-6316.
