If the old saying that nothing succeeds like excess were true, director Baz Luhrmann’s movies would have out-grossed Avatar, Titanic and everything in the Star Wars catalog. Over the past 20 years, the Australian filmmaker has built a reputation as a filmmaker who always buys in bulk when it comes to sets, costumes, music and emotions.

The acclaimed a cappella ensemble Anonymous 4 returns to Kalamazoo to perform a program of 13th century French music Friday night. 

A joint presentation of Fontana Chamber Arts and the WMU Medieval Institute, the program blends sacred works honoring the Virgin Mary and secular songs about a fetching shepherdess named Marion.

This week has brought more indications that former Congressman Mark Schauer of Battle Creek will soon launch a campaign for Governor of Michigan. 

When bikes and cars mix on the road it can be a tense situation for everyone. Helping two- and four-wheeled traffic co-exist is a major theme of the second annual Kalamazoo Bike Week. It starts Thursday, May 9th, with a “Community Forum on Cycling”. Bike Week Co-Chairman David Warwick says he hopes it attracts motorists as well as bicyclists. The forum starts at 6 p.m. in the Lawrence Education Center at Borgess Medical Center, 1521 Gull Road, in Kalamazoo.
