This past weekend a meeting of governors from Great Lakes states was held on Mackinac Island. Not all of the governors attended and there were no major policy initiatives. But independent journalist Gary Wilson says just meeting is important.
ST. JOSEPH - The St. Joseph City Commission on Monday approved a tentative contract for Richard Lewis, the next city manager, that will pay him $125,000 a year.
Commissioners unanimously approved the agreement that calls for the Northwoods League to pay the city $35,000 a year for 35 games, 15 practices and field maintenance. The five-year agreement runs from Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 3, 2018.
LANSING, MICH. - A federal agency has dismissed a complaint seeking to ban the use of American Indian mascots in Michigan's K-12 schools. In February, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights cited 35 Michigan school districts for discrimination, saying their mascots reinforce stereotypes and hurt American Indian students' self-esteem and learning.
PORTAGE, MI -- The superintendents of the Three Rivers and Paw Paw school districts and an assistant superintendent from Farmington Public Schools are finalists for the job of Portage Public Schools and will be publicly interviewed next week, the Portage board decided Monday.
