Kalamazoo wood block print artist Mary Brodbeck says she has come to realize that very few people understand how a wood block print is made. A conference for such artists was held in Japan last year and Brodbeck attended, both as an accomplished print maker, and as a novice filmmaker. Brodbeck says learning to make a documentary was and still is a steep learning curve, but she had to tell the story of an art process that she feels few people actually understand. 

In 1985, the musical comedy Nunsense began a ten year off-Broadway run. Several sequels later the Christmas musical Nuncrackers was born. A local production of the spoof opens Friday at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. 

In the fall of 2009, Kalamazoo writer Margaret von Steinen started a Combat Veterans Writing Group that meets twice a month at the Portage District Library. The group will read from their work at the library Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in honor of Veteran’s Day.
