Mike Ramirez

Host of Alma Latina

Mike Ramirez has been associated with Alma Latina at WMUK since its launch in 1977. He came to Michigan to do farm work from Texas in 1970, and he went on to study Political Science and Spanish at Western Michigan University. He is very involved in the Hispanic & Latino community in Southwest Michigan.

Mike worked at WMU in the department of Multicultural Affairs doing everything from recruitment to cultural programing for the university. He has brought musicians, artists, NPR personalities, Latino leaders, and other cultural changemakers to WMU through his role. Highlights of his career include bringing Cesar Estrada Chavez to WMUK and marching alongside Dolores Huerta. He is committed to radio media, because it gives people the ability to express themselves, especially given his perspective as an immigrant.

Alma Latina is the longest running Spanish-language radio program in southwest Michigan. The program has been made possible through student volunteer work over the years. Mike has been the director, producer, and cohost of the program alongside Daniel Oropeza.

Mike Ramírez ha estado asociado con Alma Latina en WMUK desde que se emitió por primera vez en 1977. Llegó a Michigan para trabajar en el campo desde Texas en 1970 y luego estudió Ciencias Políticas y Español en Western Michigan University. Es muy influyente en la comunidad hispana y latina en el suroeste de Michigan.

Mike trabajó en WMU en el departamento de Asuntos Multiculturale; su trabajo incluye todo desde contratación hasta programación cultural para la Universidad. A través de su función, Mike ha traído a WMU varios músicos, artistas, personalidades de NPR, líderes Latinos y otros agentes de cambio cultural.
