(MPRN-East Lansing) Former Governor John Engler will serve as interim president of his troubled alma mater, Michigan State University.

The MSU Board of Trustees is expected to officially vote on the appointment at a meeting Wednesday morning. Engler will take the job as Michigan State faces multiple investigations into what went wrong at MSU to allow former sports doctor Larry Nassar to abuse female athletes for two decades.

Nassar survivor and Kalamazoo native Rachel Denhollander took to social media to complain the appointment smacks of insider politics. But she said she’ll wait to see what he does in the position.

Engler will run the university as the MSU board seeks a permanent replacement for Lou Anna Simon, who stepped down last week. The Detroit Free Pressis reporting former Governor Jim Blanchard will also serve as a “senior advisor” to the board. Engler unseated Blanchard in the 1990 election.
