"Long Shot" Proposals Would Change Term Limits in Michigan

WMUK

Two State lawmakers have introduced proposals that would change Michigan's term limits.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville told the Gongwer News Servicethat both his proposal and another from Republican state Senator John Pappageorge are not likely to get the two-third vote of the Legislature needed to make the statewide ballot. Both proposals would amend the Michigan Constitution.

Richardville's proposal would allow a lawmaker to serve 12 years in either the House or Senate if they collected enough petition signatures. Pappageorge's resolution calls for allowing a person to serve a total of 14 years in the Legislature in one chamber, or any combination between the two. Under the term limits amendment approved by voters in 1992, state lawmakers are limited to six years in the state House and eight years in the state Senate.
