Heavy spending is reported in some campaigns for state Legislature in Southwest Michigan. More high profile political figures visit Michigan ahead of the November election. WMU advances to the semi-finals of the MAC women’s soccer tournament.

The committees trying to elect Republicans and Democrats to the state House and Senate have spent more than $8-million on key legislative races. Caucus committees for both parties filed their final campaign finance reports before the November 6th election late last week. The Michigan Campaign Finance Network’s analysis finds that both Republicans and Democrats are spending large amounts of money in the 61st state House District, which includes Portage and the 62nd state House District that includes Battle Creek, Albion and Springfield. Both Republicans and Democrats are also spending heavily in the 20th state Senate District, which encompasses Kalamazoo County. The network says outside groups have spent $23.5-million on Michigan’s race for governor since the primary. More than $75-million has been spent on the governor’s race so far.

(WDET) Vice President Mike Pence travels to Michigan Monday to campaign for U.S. Senate hopeful John James, GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette and other members of the Republican ticket. Pence will stump for Republicans at a rally in Grand Rapids. Several high profile campaign surrogates from both sides of the political aisle have targeted Michigan in recent weeks including a Detroit rally last week by former President Barack Obama.

(Detroit Free Press) A new poll shows Michigan voters favoring all three proposals on this November’s ballot. The Detroit Free Press and several Michigan Television stations commissioned the survey by EPIC-MRA. It finds that Proposal 1 to legalize marijuana for recreational use, Proposal 2 that would create an independent commission to draw district boundaries for Congress and the state Legislature and Proposal 3 designed to make registering to vote and casting ballots easier all enjoy broad support.

(Michigan Radio) Michigan charities are urging Congress to pass a new Farm Bill when it returns to work after the mid-term elections. The old Farm Bill expired earlier this fall. The bill provides funding for numerous programs including the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program…also known as SNAP.

Western Michigan advanced to the semi-finals of the Mid-American Conference women’s soccer tournament by defeating Akron 1-0 Sunday. The Broncos will take on Ball State on Friday. The place and time have not been announced.
