Western Michigan University makes U.S. and World Report’s list of the nation’s best universities while Kalamazoo College is among the best liberal arts colleges. Business groups want student improvement to be a bigger factor in teacher evaluations. WMU men’s soccer ends a losing streak. But the Bronco women’s team sees its winning streak end.

(U.S. News and World Report) Western Michigan University is tied for 205th among the nation’s universities in the annual ranking from U.S. News and World Report. Western is tied with Central Michigan University and Wayne State University among others. The University of Michigan is ranked 27th, Michigan State University 85th, Michigan Technological University 136th and Andrews University is 194th among national universities. Kalamazoo College is tied for 65th among the nation’s liberal arts colleges in the latest rankings from U.S. News and World Report.

(Michigan Radio) Business groups are fighting a proposal to keep student growth as a smaller percentage of teacher evaluations in Michigan. This year the percentage of a teacher’s evaluation that relies on student growth is scheduled to increase from 25 percent to 40 percent. A bipartisan bill would keep the percentage at 25 percent. But business groups say the higher standard is needed.

(MPRN) Michigan voters will have another choice for Attorney General candidates in the November election. The Board of State Canvassers on Friday certified former Assistant U.S. Attorney, Christopher Graveline as a non-party candidate. Graveline initially didn’t have enough signatures to be on the ballot. So he sued the state. He argued the number of signatures needed was too high – and he won. The lawsuit surrounding Michigan’s law for independent candidates is still ongoing. Graveline will run against Republican candidate Tom Leonard and Democratic candidate Dana Nessel.

(Interlochen Public Radio) Applicants won’t be asked about their criminal history when applying for state jobs and licenses. That’s because of an executive order signed by Governor Rick Snyder on Friday. When applying for jobs that require a state license applicants were asked if they have been convicted of a felony. That question will be removed from all state job applications in October.
