The former director of the Kalamazoo Strong non-profit group is sentenced to two years’ probation. U.S. Senate candidates debate again, this time in Detroit. The straits of Mackinac become a “no anchor” zone.

(Kalamazoo Gazette) The former director of the non-profit group Kalamazoo Strong has been sentenced to two years’ probation in an embezzlement case. Rachel Kaiser was originally charged with felony embezzlement after she was accused of taking four-thousand dollars from the non-profit launched after the shooting spree in the Kalamazoo area in 2016 that left six people dead and two seriously injured. In a deal with prosecutors Kaiser pled guilty to using a computer to commit a crime. In addition to the two years’ probation, Kaiser was also ordered to pay four-thousand dollars in restitution to the non-profit group.

(Michigan Radio) U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow faced off against Republican challenger John James in their second debate in two days. Monday, the candidates were at the Detroit Economic Club. James accused the 18-year incumbent of overstaying her welcome in the Senate. He called her a hyper-partisan Democrat who’s been an ineffective and mediocre legislator. Stabenow touted her record of supporting Great Lakes funding and Michigan agriculture. She says James is big on attacks, but short on specifics of what he’d do for the state in Washington.

(WKAR) Governor Snyder’s office says a ruling by the United States Coast Guard will better protect the Great Lakes from oil spills. The Coast Guard named the Straits of Mackinac a ‘no anchor’ zone. This prohibits boats from dropping anchor in the area. In May, the state temporarily blocked boats from anchoring there. This was after the state said the pipeline was reportedly dented by an anchor. Last week, the state of Michigan and Enbridge came to an agreement to build a tunnel around the aging Line 5 pipeline. The state says Enbridge would pay for the construction and maintenance of the tunnel. The Mackinac Bridge Authority would oversee the construction.
