Albion’s former City Manager faces embezzlement charges, a day after her resignation was accepted. A Kalamazoo Central High School student is arrested for bringing a gun to school. The state House approves bills designed to improve transparency

(Battle Creek Enquirer) Former Albion City Manager LaTonya Rufus has been charged with embezzlement, a day after she resigned from that job. The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that the charges stem from allegedly using city funds for personal expenses. The Albion City Council accepted Rufus’ resignation Monday night. The Calhoun County Prosecutor’s office authorized the charges Tuesday.

(Kalamazoo Gazette) A 16 year old Kalamazoo Central High School student was arrested Tuesday for bringing a loaded gun to school. The Kalamazoo Gazette says the student whose name has not been released was taken to the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Facility on Tuesday. A case will be sent to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s office for possible criminal charges.

(MPRN) Lawmakers in the state House unanimously passed a group of bills they say will make state government more transparent. The bills would, in some cases, open the governor’s office up to freedom of information requests. They would also create a new Legislative Open Records Act to allows for some records requests from state lawmakers. The leader of the Republicans in the Senate, Senator Mike Shirkey says their chamber will do something to improve transparency but it probably won’t look like the bills the House passed.

Western Michigan’s baseball and softball teams lost on Tuesday at the University of Michigan. The Bronco baseball team dropped to 6-13 overall with a 12-5 loss to the Wolverines. WMU’s softball teamlost 3-0 in Ann Arbor on Tuesday. The Broncos are 7-12 so far during the softball season.
