Theatre production of "The Christmas Schooner" marks two important anniversaries

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Rouse Simmons, also known as “the Christmas Schooner.” Starting Friday, What A Do Theatre in Springfield near Battle Creek will perform a musical based on the famous Michigan ship.

Local artist to make documentary about Japanese woodblock printing

Kalamazoo wood block print artist Mary Brodbeck says she has come to realize that very few people understand how a wood block print is made. A conference for such artists was held in Japan last year and Brodbeck attended, both as an accomplished print maker, and as a novice filmmaker. Brodbeck says learning to make a documentary was and still is a steep learning curve, but she had to tell the story of an art process that she feels few people actually understand.

Large-scale sculptor highlights the beauty and terror of the automobile

  • Listen to hear about sculptor T.J. Aitken

Artist T.J. Aitken will dedicate his sculpture called Renaissance Race to the City of Plainwell. It looks like large spools of paper twisting and turning in the wind, with angelic figures cut into the ends of each roll. The work represents Plainwell’s past as a center for paper manufacturing, and how residents are working to revitalize the city. Aitken says he has always been fascinated by machines.
