WMU medical school construction begins

Late awarded sub-contracts and frozen ground has caused some delays for the $68 million project.
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Excavation work is underway at the site of Western Michigan University's new medical school. The chilliest March in 15 years caused a few delays, said Christopher Pyzik, project manager for Western Michigan University. But the construction manager, Walbridge, has assured him the $68 million project at 300 Portage St.

State House to decide universities, school districts penalties

School districts and universities that approved union contracts just before the Right-to-Work laws went into effect may off the hook. The Lansing State Journal reports penalties, like 15 percent cuts for universities, will not be in the state Senate budget. Western Michigan University was just one of the many public universities that approved new contracts before March 21st. Gongwer News Service reports the House Appropriations Committee will consider putting the penalties in their budget bill tomorrow.
LANSING - Penalties for colleges, universities, school districts and communities that approved union contracts in the weeks leading up to right-to-work laws taking effect will not be included in the state Senate versions of those budgets.

Pianist Jeremy Siskind presents classics, improvisations

One of the major young voices in jazz piano, Jeremy Siskind will present a solo faculty recital tonight at Western Michigan University which combines inspired pairings of works by composers from Rachmaninoff to Dizzy Gillespie in the first half.
