Serlin says for her, the issue is personal. She says she was working at a Detroit women’s shelter in 1985 when Medicaid funding for abortion came under attack, and one day she walked in on a client who was bleeding and moaning.

“She had given herself an abortion because she was afraid that she couldn’t have one. Because she was raped by her husband and was pregnant,” Serlin said, adding that the unsafe abortion left the woman infertile.

The march, Serlin said, is “a national calling for everyone to come out and say that we care about women's lives and that we are going to do everything we can to not go backwards.”

Serlin says she’s seen strong interest in the women’s march on social media. It’ll follow a rally in Bronson Park, with live music and a slate of speakers that includes Wanda Mosley, the national field director of the organization Black Voters Matter.
