Allied Paper Landfill cleanup protest planned

WMUK

Opponents of a proposal to keep toxic PCB contamination in a Kalamazoo landfill plan to hold a protest march next week. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has suggested that the material could be safely contained at the Allied Paper Landfill on Kalamazoo’s east side. But area residents, city officials, and environmental groups say it should be completely removed. The Kalamazoo River Cleanup Coalition says it will sponsor the march to a rally at the landfill gate on Alcott Street Wednesday afternoon, May 15th, from 5 to 7 p.m.

EPA officials say they will release their final report and recommendation on the landfill later this year. They say the cost of completely removing the contamination would be much higher than capping it in place. But critics say the agency's cost estimate for removal is much to high.
