Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed a lawsuit to shut down a controversial pipeline. Enbridge Energy's Line 5 carries oil and natural gas under the Straits of Mackinac. The lawsuit was filed today in Ingham County Circuit Court.

“The continued operation of Line 5 presents an extraordinary, unreasonable threat to the public because of the very real risk of further anchor strikes, the inherent risks of pipeline operations and the foreseeable catastrophic effects if an oil spill occurs in the Straits,” Nessel said.

Nessel also asked a separate court to dismiss a lawsuit by Enbridge against the state. It would enforce a deal struck by then Governor Rick Snyder and Enbridge shortly before Snyder left office, to build a new multi-use tunnel under the Straits that would include the company’s pipeline. In a statement, Enbridge said it was still reviewing the filings. But the company says it is disappointed the state won’t continue talks about the tunnel.
