Gongwer: SoS dismisses charges against House Speaker Jase Bolger

The Michigan Secretary of State’s office has dismissed complaints that State House Speaker Jase Bolger violated campaign finance laws. The Gongwer News Service reports that that the decision was announced in a letter Wednesday to Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer.

Brewer charged that Bolger, a Republican from Marshall, violated state laws by helping Democratic Grand Rapids State Representative Roy Schmidt switch to the GOP last spring and finding a “straw” candidate to oppose him. That candidate dropped out of the race soon after.

The Secretary of State’s office says it is still investigating Brewer’s complaint that Schmidt also violated state election laws.

Update: Mlive has more on the dismissal of complaints against Bolger, and Mlive/Kalamazoo reports that Governor Snyder will campaign with Bolger on Friday. The Governor will join Bolger at three stops in Calhoun County..
