Three homes, two commercial buildings and a prominent Kalamazoo business owner will get historic preservation awards next month. The city's Historic Preservation Commission announced the winners on Friday, April 26th.
The winners include renovation project at the Rickman House by Housing Resources, Incorporated, and the Metropolitan Center commercial development on East Michigan Avenue. Kalamazoo brewer Larry Bell will be recognized for "adaptive use" of buildings at his Eccentric Cafe on Kalamazoo Avenue. The Kalamazoo County Land Bank, Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services, and two private owners will receive awards for home renovations around Kalamazoo. They are the Chappell-Stewart House on Elm Street; the Ernest and Katherine Johnson House on South Rose; and a bungalow on Forest Street built in 1923.
The awards will be presented during a ceremony at Kalamazoo City Hall on May 22nd at 5:30 p.m. The presentation is part of local observances of National Historic Preservation Month.
