A Kalamazoo Public Safety officer was hurt and a suspect is dead after gunfire at a downtown business Tuesday afternoon, March 12.
During a news conference later in the afternoon, KDPS officials said two officers responded to reports of shots fired at Grifols Biomat Plasma donation center on Kalamazoo Avenue shortly before noon. When they arrived, they were confronted by a company employee with a handgun who fired at the officers, wounding one of them. The other officer returned fire, killing the suspect.
The injuries suffered by the officer were not considered life-threatening and he was later released from the hospital. The department says the officer's bulletproof vest prevented more serious injuries.
The incident led police to close a block of Kalamazoo Avenue to all traffic. No other injuries were reported.
