Kalamazoo College’s athletic teams have been assessed additional penalties for violations related to the awarding of financial aid to some student-athletes.
The college announced on Thursday that the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has vacated all of the Hornets’ conference regular season wins and championships as well as post season conference wins over a four year period.
The penalties cover the 2012-13 through the 2015-16 academic years. The MIAA is also banning all K-College’s athletic teams from consideration in conference post-season play for the 2017-18 academic year. Conference wins and championships in the 2016-17 year are not affected by the ruling.
Last year the NCAA placed Kalamazoo College on three years’ probation for its process of calculating and awarding financial aid to some student athletes. But the NCAA said the Hornets could compete in post-season play. In a statement, K-College president Jorge Gonzalez says the school has exhausted all options for a different outcome and the best path is to accept the penalties the MIAA has imposed.
