New Knific Work To Premiere At Saugatuck Fest

Drew Le

The Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck presents "Musical Companions" this week, a program of works for two to seven players by Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Nielsen, and Michigan composer Tom Knific.

Performing on all three works is bassist Jack Unzicker, assistant professor of double bass at the University of Texas, Arlington. He and his wife, violinist Martha Walvoord will give the world premiere of the Duo No. 3 for violin and double bass by Western Michigan University professor of bass Tom Knific. Knific wrote the piece in honor of Agnes Hughes and Gunther Fonken, two long time supporters of the arts in Kalamazoo.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
