It started in Christopher Bigg's garage, with Andrew Rathbun improvising on saxophone and Biggs improvising with his personally-designed electronic effects, sampling and shaping.

It was something new and fun for both of the associate professors of music at Western Michigan University.  They invited two more improvisors, jazz faculty members Keith Hall on drums and Jon Hébert on bass, and NODES was born. They'll debut a programof structured and free works, including a graphic composition by Lisa Coons, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, Oct 27 in the Dalton Center Recital Hall at WMU. Biggs and Rathbun spoke to Cara Lieurance for a preview.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
