Not one, not four, but eight cellists will participate in a program called "A Cello Explosion" this Sunday. Cellists from the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, and the Kalamazoo Philharmonia will be featured in a wide variety of music, from a Joplin rag, to the William Tell Overture to a work by Kalamazoo composer and cellist Elizabeth Start.
David Peshlakai, principal cellist of the KSO, and Anne Sherfield of the BCSO talk about putting the program together with six other cellists (Elizabeth Start, Luke Cook, Silvia Sidorane, Nola Matthews Thole, Mary Butler, and Carol Bullock Russell). Members of the group, called Octocelli, raided their own music cupboards to find selections for the concert. The idea for the concert began with a performance last spring of Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras, with soprano Kaitlyn Spencer, for the Kalamazoo Bach Festival. A reprise of the classical favorite will conclude the concert.
The concert will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, August 30 at First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo. A freewill offering is suggested.
