Old-world Tchaikovsky style from Battle Creek Symphony

anneharrigan.com

Conductor Anne Harrigan can hear a remarkable difference in Tchaikovsky when the musicians of the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra play his music.

It's featured on a May 4th programat W. K. Kellogg Auditorium. The group includes many eastern European players who bring a naturally fluid, old-world accent to the music. Ms. Harrigan is eager to shape the styles of the principal players into vibrant interpretations of the Symphony No. 4 and the famous Violin Concerto in D.

The soloist for the concerto is young American violinist Chad Hoopes. An 18 year-old from Cleveland, he has appeared with the Vancouver Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera, and many others. Ms. Harrigan finds his playing to have some similarities to that of the great 20th century virtuoso David Oistrakh.
