Real Life Seeps Into Fairy-Tale World Of 'Into The Woods'

Following the world premiere of a newly-commissioned play, WMU Theatre will continue its season with a classic Sondheim musical staged in an outdoor amphitheater. Director Anthony J. Hamilton and Isaiah Le, a WMU senior who plays the Narrator/Mysterious Man, gave Cara Lieurance an inside look at the themes ofInto The Woods: Be careful what you wish for; "nice" is different than "good;" and no one is alone.

Le says the detailed, complicated score required hundreds of hours of rehearsal but gave him new appreciation of his fellow players. According to Hamilton that was by design. Not everyone in the cast is a music theater major, and that created an opportunity to discover new singing voices and talents. He says his only worry for opening weekend is the weather. Rain dates will be offered if inclement weather forces a cancellation. Full details are at the WMU Theatre website.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
