Early in 2012, a promising young journalist joined WMUK's local news team pretty much straight out of college. In the six years since then, Rebecca Thiele has become the producer and host of Arts & More, our weekly look at arts and culture in southwest Michigan, and WMUK's "beat" reporter covering the environment, science, and technology. Sadly, we must now bid her farewell.
Thiele has accepted an exciting new position covering statewide environmental issues for Indiana Public Media based at WFIU FM/WTIU-TV in Bloomington.
"Though I'm sad to leave my WMUK family, I'm looking forward to covering these important issues in Indiana — a state that at one time had very little environmental coverage."
Thiele came to WMUK from KBIA-FM at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she was a student reporter. She was also a news intern at KWMU/Saint Louis Public Radio and covered local events in Missouri for AOL's Patch.com.
The range of stories and issues Thiele has covered during her time with WMUK is both broad and deep. Among her favorites are a feature about how plastic fibers from our clothes get into the environment, and an Arts and More segment about a book club for young women at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home.
"WMUK is a newsroom that's passionate about long-form, sound-rich stories and I'm glad I got to improve those skills here," she says.
