Schuette Files Lawsuit to Close Abortion Clinic

Michigan Attorney Bill Schuette has filed a lawsuit to shut down an abortion clinic in Detroit.

Schuette’s office says this is the third time the anti-abortion Republican has used this particular law to shut down an abortion provider – in this case, the Summit Women’s Center in Detroit.

The lawsuit claims the Summit Women’s Center is not abiding by Michigan’s corporate licensing requirements and a law demanding a licensed doctor to be in charge of a facility that offers abortions.

“A non-physician is licensed as the owner and operator of a medical facility that     provides abortion services,” said Andrea Bitely, Schuette’s press secretary.

Bitely says the clinic does employ medical professionals to provide direct services to patients.

Bitely says this is at least the third time the law has been used to shut down an abortion clinic in Michigan. The Summit Women’s Center had no immediate comment on the lawsuit.
