Arjun Verma will perform Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Western Michigan University, despite snowy weather (it's expected to end this afternoon). Verma began playing sitar as a child, starting off with a pieced-together instrument with a table leg for a neck. His father, a master musician himself, was an early teacher, and later Verma was able to work the the great maestro Ali Akbar Khan, who founded a music school for Indian Classical music in the Bay area of San Francisco. Verma compares Khan's influence to that of another great composer, Ludwig van Beethoven.
In an interview with Cara Lieurance, Verma previews his Kalamazoo concert by talking about his training and development, what audiences can expect in a concert of Indian Classical music, and how he likes to share improvisations with his duo partner, tabla player Nitin Mitta.
