Southwest Michigan Today: Monday August 6, 2018

The state waits to hear from owners of private wells in Parchment, while the city of Kalamazoo asks for homeowners to flush their pipes. The Michigan Supreme Court will hear arguments about which witnesses can have support dogs in court. The Growlers are close to clinching a playoff spot, but the Bombers winning streak is getting in the way.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says it has tested 99 private wells in Parchment where elevated levels of PFASes have been found in the water supply. The DEQ says it is still waiting to hear from 13 homeowners who have been contacted by the department. The city of Kalamazoo is asking Parchment residents to flush their pipes as soon as possible to help with connecting to the water system. The city has provided instructions on flushing pipes, but has not set a deadline. Kalamazoo County says bottled water will continue to be distributed at Parchment High School this week. On-site recycling is also available at the high school for Parchment residents who want to return used water bottles. Distribution will be from noon until 8:00p.m. through Friday. Residents will be asked to verify their address.

(MPRN) The Michigan Supreme Court could decide if so-called “able bodied adults” can have an emotional support dog with them when they testify in court. Multiple prosecutor’s offices already have support dogs for children and vulnerable adult victims. The idea is the dog makes the witness more comfortable, and better able to open up. But the Court of Appeals has said adult victims cannot sit with the dog and handler while testifying. Now prosecutors have filed an appeal with the state’s highest court. Opponents of support dogs say they could sway the jury into believing a witness and unfairly prejudice the defendant.

(WCMU) Members of Central Michigan University’s board of trustees say the school’s 15th president was hired for his commitment to students and inclusivity. Robert O. Davies will succeed George E. Ross as CMU’s president. The hiring was announced on Friday. Davies is the former president of both Murray State University in Kentucky and Eastern Oregon University. He will begin his tenure at Central Michigan University on September 1st.

In baseball, Kalamazoo is now a win away from clinching a playoff spot after an 8-5 win at Wisconsin in 11 innings Sunday. The Growlers play at Madison Monday night. Kalamazoo could have clinched a spot in the Northwoods League playoffs Sunday if Battle Creek had lost, but the Bombers have won six straight. They beat Rockford Sunday 6-5. It was the Bombers’ final home game of the season. They will play their final six games on the road, beginning at Wisconsin Rapids Monday night.
