Kalamazoo County Commissioner Stephanie Moore will run for state House next year. Governor Whitmer announces grants for better treatment of opioid addiction. Protesters call for a stop of deportations to Iraq.

The field in next year's Democratic 60th State House District primary is growing. Kalamazoo County Commissioner Stephanie Moore says she'll officially kick off her campaign on Thursday. She's the second Democrat on the County Commission to enter the race. Commissioner Traci Hall announced her bid for the district that includes the City of Kalamazoo earlier this year. Current State Representative Jon Hoadley is term-limited. He's running for Congress next year.

(MPRN) Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced more than a million dollars will go to hospitals to help create better systems for treating people with opioid addiction. Whitmer says opioid addiction is a large and growing problem. She says one reason is people end up at emergency rooms after they overdose. But the govenror says they are often released without a follow-up plan. Whitmer says that means many of the same people make repeat trips to the hospital foe emergency care without treating their addiction. The first grants will go to hospitals in Detroit and northern Michigan, with more going to other health care centers if the programs are successful.

(Michigan Radio) Protesters descended on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in Detroit Monday. The protesters are trying to stop hundreds of Iraq nationals from being returned to Iraq. The government has slowly proceeded with deporting some Iraqis with standing orders of removal after it won a court case late last year. Protesters say conditions in Iraq are too dangerous for Americanized Iraqis. Many are Chaldean Christians and have not been to Iraq for decades.

In baseball, Kalamazoo won at Kokomo Monday night 4-1. The Growlers ended a five losing streak with the victory, and will host Kenosha Tuesday night to begin a two game series at Homer Stryker Field.

Battle Creek rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 7-3 win over Kenosha Monday night. The Bombers will begin a two game series at Rockford Tuesday night.
