Upton Says Congress Has to Move on Immigration Reform

WMUK

West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton says President Obama is right when he says that Congress needs to pass immigration reform.

Upton says the President's decision to issue and executive order may make it more difficult to get immigration reform approved. But the Saint Joseph Republican says it should be a top priority when the new Congress is sworn in after the first of the year.

The Senate approved an immigration bill last year, but it has not been taken up in the House. Upton says factors such as House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's loss in a Republican primary, stopped any momentum in the House for immigration reform.

But Upton says the issue isn't going away, and he says Republicans, who took control of the Senate in the November, have a responsibility to govern.

Upton was interviewed by WMUK's Gordon Evans and Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Alex Mitchell on Tuesday for WMUK's WestSouthwest. A longer interview will air Monday at 9:30 that will include discussion of net neutrality, Upton's 21 Century Cures initiative and his political future.

Gordon Evans became WMUK's Content Director in 2019 after more than 20 years as an anchor, host and reporter. A 1990 graduate of Michigan State, he began work at WMUK in 1996.
