Western Michigan University has tentative plans for a brewpub in its new student center, but Trustees cancelled a vote on the proposal Thursday, saying the paperwork was not finished. The postponement came the same day the university announced that a WMU sophomore had been killed by a suspected drunk driver who was also a student at Western.

According to public records, Western is considering renting space in the new student center to the Portage Brewing Company, also known as Latitude 42. It would serve food, beer and wine. Board Secretary Kahler Schuemann said the vote was canceled after Trustees realized Wednesday night that the contract hadn’t been signed.

“We have to have our I’s dotted and our T’s crossed and it’s my responsibility before things go to the Board to make sure that happens,” Schuemann said.

“It needed to come off until that agreement is signed,” he added.

Latitude 42 has restaurants in Oshtemo and Portage. Western plans to open the new student center next fall.

In an email to the campus community Thursday afternoon, WMU President Edward Montgomery said sophomore Bailey Broderick was struck by a suspected intoxicated driver “in a neighborhood off campus.” Broderick died Wednesday night.

“The car that struck Bailey was driven by a student,” Montgomery wrote. “The 19-year-old driver was arrested at the scene, suspected of operating under the influence causing death.”
