A plan to address the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic is on its way to the U.S. Senate. The House approved it Saturday after Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached an agreement with President Donald Trump. It includes expanded benefits for people who can't work because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The city of Kalamazoo has declared a local state of emergency in anticipation of possible large crowds for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. According to the city, the declaration allows for establishing police zones in areas where large gatherings are expected.

Michigan health officials say the number of COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 54.  The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday night that nine more adults have tested positive for the disease caused by the coronavirus. Saturday the state said eight more adults tested presumptive positive. (Note: This story was updated Monday March 16th at 7:30 p.m.)

The state has ordered schools around Michigan to close because of the rapidly expanding coronavirus pandemic. Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the decision during a news conference late Thursday, March 12.
