C. Lieurance

A combo of prodigiously talented young jazz musicians who met at Western Michigan University, As The Sea is noted for the close communication between the players themselves and between the players and the audience. One of the group's favorite venues is an intimate house concert, an atmosphere they reproduced in WMUK's Takeda Studio.

Jazz pianist and composer Frank Carlberg, noted for his settings of modern poetry to music, his wife, singer Christine Correa, and Western Michigan University jazz professor Andrew Rathbun joined Cara Lieurance recently for a discussion of Mr. Carlberg's music, which was featured in a WMU concert in January.

Gerry Szymanski

Pianist and composer Jeremy Siskind, who performs tonight with his New York-based trio (Nancy Harms, vocals and Lucas Pino, reeds), talks to Cara Lieurance about renowned jazz pianist Fred Hersch, who recently performed at Western Michigan University.

Hersch has had a great influence on him as a teacher and mentor, says Jeremy.

Several years ago, Chicago-based guitarists and bandleaders Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic decided to form a duo to explore high-level guitar playing that blends immense technique, layered melody and rhythm, and classical, jazz, central European, and even film influences.

The duo has recorded two albums of original works, "Blackmail" (2013) and "The Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Duo" (2009).
