(MPRN-Lansing) As the state School Reform Office moves closer to potentially closing multiple schools across Michigan, a bill ending the law is being hotly debated in the Legislature.

Kalamazoo Public Schools has said “no thanks” to allowing weapons at its schools. The district’s decision to bar things like guns and knives follows a recent Michigan Court of Appeals decision, which found that districts do have a right to ban weapons.

The KPS board voted unanimously Thursday night in favor of the new policy.

"Our children are not failures." That was the theme of a public forum Wednesday, February 1, on the possibility that the state might close two of Kalamazoo's public schools.

A state representative from Kalamazoo says forcing two schools in the city to close or go under state management is a bad idea.

The Washington Writers’ Academy and the Woodward School for Technology and Research have both appeared on the state’s list of failing schools.The Michigan Department of Education could appoint managers to oversee them, but it might also order them closed.

Members of a Kalamazoo teachers’ union are getting up early on Thursday to rally for changes to education policy. The Kalamazoo Education Association calls it a “walk-in” for schools and says about 200 cities around the country will participate.
