This Sunday, African-American history scholar Michelle Johnson, who’s also the executive director of the FIRE Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative, will present a lecture on “Oral Tradition in African American Culture.” It will focus on acclaimed playwright and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, one of the major figures in the Harlem Renaissance. Johnson knows the subject from experience -- she actually followed Hurston into rural Florida.

Old Memories Surface At Veteran's Writing Group

They served their nation honorably, but many combat veterans have had, or may still have, difficulty actually talking about their experiences. A special writing project is helping a group of Kalamazoo-area military veterans talk about experiences they may not have thought about in years.

Poet and psychologist Gail Martin will hold a reading Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Portage District Library for her new book Begin Empty-Handed, which won this year’s Perugia Press Prize. Perugia Press publishes poetry by up-and-coming female poets every year.
