A new legislative session has begun in Lansing. Representative Jase Bolger was re-elected Speaker of the House on Wednesday. That was a foregone conclusion, the only question was whether he would get unanimous support. But two Democrats cast no votes against Bolger as speaker.

West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton he would have preferred “a grand bargain” rather than the deal reached last week that averted the “fiscal cliff.” But Upton voted for the agreement, in part, because it brings certainty in the tax code. He says it’s the first of a three step process.

A new report on Southwest Michigan’s economy finds growth slowed in December. The director of Grand Valley State University’s Supply Chain Management Program Brian Long finds economic indicators were down in the region, compared to November.

When he was running for governor, Rick Snyder had a ten-point plan to “Reinvent Michigan”. Point number five was: “Restoring cities and controlling urban sprawl”. Snyder came to the annual Michigan Farm Bureau dinner recently at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. Michigan Now’s Chris McCarus was there too.

WMU recognized for "green" campus projects

For the third year in a row, Western Michigan University has been named one of America’s most environmentally responsible universities. The Princeton review and the U.S. Green Building Council point to the purchase of five Ford Transit Connect electric vehicles and fifteen new charging stations attached to a massive solar panel as just a few of the university’s successes.
