Unemployment in Michigan was down slightly in March. Toxic PFAS chemicals found in private wells near the Gerald R. Ford Airport in Grand Rapids. WMU baseball drops a slugfest to Michigan State.

Michigan’s unemployment rate edged down slightly last month. The state Department of Technology, Management and Budget says the seasonally adjusted jobless was down a tenth of a percent in March to 4.7%. Unemployment was a tenth of a percent higher last month than it was in March of 2017.

Toxic chemicals have been discovered in private wells near the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids. A handful of private wells have tested positive for toxic chemicals in the drinking water. The toxic chemicals are called per-and-poly floral alkyl substances, commonly referred to as PFAS. It’s the same chemicals that have made it into dozens of private wells in the Belmont and Rockford areas. Many residents requested the testing after airport officials revealed firefighters have been using the toxic firefighting foam for more than two decades. While so far, four homes have tested positive for the chemicals, a representative of the Department of Environmental Quality says the water is still technically safe to drink. Research has linked PFAS to liver and kidney cancers. (WGVU)
