The state Senate has adjourned without putting a proposed sales tax increase on the ballot to pay for improving Michigan's roads.
The Gongwer News Service reports that the Senate adjourned on Thursday without acting on the proposal. In order to put the issue on the May ballot, it had to be approved by March 7th. Governor Snyder has called for an additional $1.2-billion to fix Michigan's roads and bridges. He has proposed a combination of gas tax and vehicle registration increases to raise the money.
Lawmakers have been looking for an alternative to the governor's plan. A sales tax increase has been floated as part of a road funding proposal. But the outlook for the sales tax proposal getting on the ballot have been looking grim (Mlive story from Wednesday).
