Michigan Unemployment Rate Unchanged in June

Melissa Benmark

Michigan’s monthly jobless rate is unchanged at 5.5 percent. That’s well below the 7.1 percent rate from this time a year ago.

Over the past 12 months, the biggest job gains were in construction, but there were also healthy increases in business services and manufacturing. There were slight reductions last month in the total number of people who are employed, as well as the number of people competing for jobs.

“Michigan’s labor market indicators were mostly stable from May to June,”

said Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.

“Overall, the state’s labor market continues to show improvement halfway through 2015 relative to 2014.”

When people who’ve quit looking for work are counted, along with part-timers who’d like to be full-time, the state’s official rate of unemployment and under-employment is 12-point-six percent.
