The city of Battle Creek's efforts to lure new businesses has been aided by a workforce development program. Battle Creek Enquirer reporter Jennifer Bowmandiscussed the issue with WMUK's Gordon Evans.
Bowman says Battle Creek's Economic Development Agency is focusing on workforce development, in part to respond to what companies are seeking. She says companies want skilled workers, but also employees that have a strong work ethic and a desire to move up in the company.
Kellogg Community College's Regional Manufacturing Technology Center is seen as a model of a public-private partnership to help train workers. Bowman says other cities are now working to launch similar programs. She says companies say are willing to invest in training people from Battle Creek, rather than trying to recruit from outside the area.
