A founding member of the Americana band The Corn Fed Girls, and co-host of Grassroots on WMUK, singer-songwriter Darcy Wilkin will soon release her first solo album, Bristol. She'll feature music from the new project in analbum release concert at 8 pm on Saturday, Feb 8 at Bell's Eccentric Café.
Wilkin and Cara Lieurance spend a little time on each song on the album, which features seven originals and four specially-picked cover songs. The album title Bristol, she says, comes from a line in one of her songs. It's the name of a Michigan ghost town, and a word she liked the sound of. Then, from her producer Joe Newberry, she discovered that it's also the town in Tennessee where the Carter Family began their recorded legacy.
Wilkin doesn't shy away from themes of loss and life's struggles in her music, taking an honest but compassionate look at her own and others' foibles, in "Beyond All Repair," "Restless Mind," and other originals. She praises the contributions of the other musicians on the album, who include Rick Slachta, Mark Sahlgren, Jon Shain, Jordan Hamilton, Cori Somers, Drew Howard, Mark Hartman, Lillian Werbin, Grace Gheen, Sarah Fuerst and Joe Newberry.
