Western Michigan University trustees have approved a new policy that makes Western’s campus tobacco free beginning in September of next year.

The board unanimously approved the measure during its meeting Thursday. The policy states that tobacco can only be used in enclosed personal vehicles. A presentation was made to Western Michigan trustees in July. The university says it is making tobacco cessation programs available for faculty, staff and students. The ban that takes effect September first includes cigarettes, e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
