Kalamazoo LGBT Hate Crimes Coalition Formed

Several groups say they’re forming a coalition to fight hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the Kalamazoo area. The move follows a break-in at the home of a same-sex couple last month. The coalition says that’s only one example of crimes targeting the LGBT community.

The coalition includes Western Michigan University’s Office of LGBT Services. Other groups involved include the Kalamazoo Alliance for Equality, the Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center, Equality Michigan, Community AIDS Resources and Education Services in Kalamazoo, and Badlands Strategies.

The new coalition says it will hold a public forum on the hate crime issue on August 14. It will start at 6 p.m. at the Douglass Community Association, 1000 West Patterson Street in Kalamazoo.
