Sidney Ellis started three months ago as the new executive director of the Douglass Community Association outreach center in Kalamazoo. He comes at an interesting time in its history--the organization is turning 100 years. The building is named after abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. Ellis says the Douglass is a hidden gem that he plans to work to help more people know about, so they can get services there or volunteer.

Ellis says that raising funds for capital improvements, programming and staff is another big goal, an area in which he offers background.
He was most recently director of mission advancement for the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo. He has also been executive director of the Black Arts & Cultural Center.
