The city of Kalamazoo gets $1-million to remove lead water service lines while Benton Harbor is under a state advisory for elevated lead levels. A hefty price tag for Michigan’s race for governor. Former President Barack Obama will campaign with Democrats in Detroit Friday.

The city of Kalamazoo will receive $1-million from the state to remove lead water service lines. A news release from the city says the grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will help fund the city’s ongoing efforts to replace water lines containing lead. Kalamazoo is one of 18 communities that received grant funding as part of a pilot program to improve water infrastructure, and protect water quality and public health.

(St. Joseph Benton Harbor Herald-Palladium) Benton Harbor’s water system is under a state advisory after testing showed higher than acceptable levels of lead. The St. Joseph Benton Harbor Herald-Palladium reports that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s sampling this summer from 30 homes in Benton Harbor found eight were above the action level of 15 parts per billion for lead. The city plans to share more information about what the advisory means for residents later today.

(MPRN) In just two weeks Michigan’s next governor will be decided and that decision will have come with a hefty price tag. The final tally of just how expensive this election cycle is has yet to be determined, but some preliminary numbers show it could be one of the most expensive governor’s races in state history. The Michigan Campaign Finance Network has tracked about $61-million so far put into the governor’s race. This includes the primary. Another reporting deadline is at the end of the week, which will give a better idea of just how much money has gone into this race, and where the money is coming from.

(Michigan Radio) The American Civil Liberties Union is focused on voter suppression two weeks before the November election. And Michigan is among the states the ACLU is looking at. The ACLU is the biggest financial backer of Proposal 3 on Michigan’s November ballot. Among other things….the proposal would put straight party voting and same day voter registration in Michigan’s state constitution. Former President Barack Obama will campaign for Michigan Democratic candidates later this week.

The Michigan Democratic Party says Obama will be in Detroit on Friday. Matt Longjohn who is challenging Republican Fred Upton in Southwest Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District, is one of four Democratic Congressional candidates scheduled to be at Friday’s rally. Senator Debbie Stabenow and the Democrats’ candidate for governor Gretchen Whitmer will also campaign with Obama at the event in Detroit.

(Michigan Radio) Prominent Detroit ministers and NAACP leaders say they are in a David vs Goliath fight to defeat a marijuana legalization ballot question November 6th. Recent polls have shown a majority of likely Michigan voters are planning to vote for legalizing recreational marijuana. But the opponents say they plan to spread their anti-pot message between now and Election Day, November 6th.

Western Michigan’s record is even at 3-3 six games into the hockey season after a 4-1 loss Tuesday night at Bowling Green. The Broncos next play at Denver November second and third.
