AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO MARCH 2023 PROGRAM: RIPPLE EFFECTS OF WOLF RESTORATION IN ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK

AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO MARCH 2023 PROGRAM: RIPPLE EFFECTS OF WOLF RESTORATION IN ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK

The predator-prey dynamic between wolves and moose has been studied on Isle Royale for the past 50 years. In recent years, the wolf population declined to unsustainable levels, and in 2018 the decision was made to reintroduce wolves, the apex predator, at Isle Royale. Since the reintroduction of wolves on Isle Royale in 2018-2019, observations have been made on the wolves’ impact on other species and ecosystems.

In this presentation Rolf Peterson will provide an update on wolf recovery at Isle Royale National Park following wolf introduction in 2018-2019, as well as the effect of wolf presence on the integrity of freshwater aquatic systems.

Rolf Peterson has been involved in ecological studies of wolves and moose in Isle Royale National Park for the past 50 years, focusing on their predator-prey relationship and what it means for the island ecosystem. He joined the faculty at Michigan Technological University (MTU) after receiving a PhD in Wildlife Ecology from Purdue University, and together with graduate students he has also conducted wolf research in Minnesota, Yellowstone, and Alaska. Following his retirement from the regular faculty he has continued doing predator-prey research as a Research Professor at MTU. Rolf has over 100 peer-reviewed publications from his research.

Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building.

We will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be emailed shortly before the meeting. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing.
