Repatriation of Artwork - Wish You Were Here
Repatriation of Artwork - Wish You Were Here
Repatriation of artwork and cultural artifacts is one of the most important issues facing museums around the world today. From the recent return of Benin bronzes, and the ongoing discussion of whether the Elgin Marbles should be returned to Greece, repatriation is a popular international news topic. There are arguments both against and in favor of repatriation. Laura DeBecker, Interim Chief Curator and the Helmut and Candis Stern Curator of African Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, will discuss the complex issues of ethical ownership, provenance, and potential return of artworks back to their communities of origin.
