Home In Michigan, Chelsea Morris Shephard Prepares Starring Role In 'Orpheus'

Opera Grand Rapids

Chelsea Morris Shephard will perform the role of Amour this weekend, in Opera Grand Rapids' new production of Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orpheus & Euridice. A native of Michigan, she credits Mattawan choir director David Hook and Kalamazoo Children's Chorus director Fred Sang with encouraging her to pursue vocal performance.

Morris Shephard explains the timeless plot of the opera, describes some of the modern features in director Timothy Nelson's staging, and praises her co-stars, high tenor Zach Finkelstein and soprano Claire Rottsolk. Orpheus and Euridice will be performed Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at the Devos Center For Arts And Worship in Grand Rapids.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
